Good Fishing

Another windy rough day. I would like to look at the records for all the past years and look and see if there has ever been weather this bad down here for so long. It has been the windiest, roughest year ever. The sun did come out for half the day today, then it rained. I think everybody was a little beat up after today. We had Charlie Duerr and his crew, and we also had Scott Kerrigan again. We ended up catching 22 today in less than stellar conditions. Unfortunately i could not make very many of the sailfish jump today while on the leader. I was really hoping to get Scott his "Home Run" shot. This was his last day fishing with us. He is off to Miami for the boat show. The next time I will see him will be in Cape Verde this spring for some blue marlin fishing. Tomorrow shrek is fishing with us again, and again it is going to be rough. Hopefully the fish will bite and we won't have time to think rough. Well I'm worn out and going to bed more tomorrow. I'll add somre random photos from the island.

Blown Out

The weather reamains windy, too windy to fish. So instead of talking fish I will talk about my wife. I first met Kristen several years ago at a friends house. We never were anything but friends. Here is something many people do not know. The first time I asked her out she said no. So I really didn't persue her much after that. But I guess in time she could not resist my good looks and charming personality and finally gave in. We were married on May 3rd last year. We enjoyed a honeymoon in Barbados. We currently live in Kitty Hawk NC with our golden retriever Ellie. Kristen arrives here in Isla on Saturday and I can't wait. I have been gone for over a month and I miss her like crazy. This will be the first Valentines day we have ever spent together. Since this post has been dedicated to her I'll add a picture.

Rough

Had the Italian's and Scott Kerrigan with us today. It was one rough ride out. the wind came around from the south east. The good news is it warmed things up a bit and I could actually wear a t-shirt. The bad news is it was rough. The wind was blowing a lot harder than I thought it was. The marina is protected from wind coming from that direction. The fishing was good today. The conditions made it a little tough, but oh well nothing you can do about that. We ended up with 15 today. It was a great warm up. I think Scott got some great shots, I don't know that they are the home run he is looking for, but if I took them I would think I was the man. We have the same crew tomorrow. It would be nice to get some pretty weather that will make the conditions a little more favorable for hooking the fish, and getting some good pictures without getting spray all over the lens. Enough talking let's see if i can find a picture or two to post. I didn't take any today. Why take pictures when you have a professional with you?

Night & Day

Well the fish are here. The past two days the sail fishing has been excellent. We have had the same group the past two days. Yesterday they did great catching 21 out of 30 something bites. Today they caught 13. 13 sounds really good right? Well they had over 40 sail fish bites. So their percentage was way down today. The most important thing is they had a great time. Aside from the 40 bites we had we probably saw at least 20 more. It has been rough the past 2 days and calmed down some in the late afternoon. It has been all trolling bites, no birds. The birds are fun, but you have to get on the right bunch, by yourself, and have the right anglers. Tomorrow Shrek and Mag's are fishing with us. They are my Italians from New Jersey. I think they are connected somehow. They shoot the tv show the Soprano's in their home town. Their names are Robert, and the one looks like a white tattooed version of shrek. Scott Kerrigan is also riding with us tomorrow. For those that do not know Scott is the best fishing photographer in the world. He has taught me a lot about getting shots and I really enjoy his work. Well the fishing is starting to pick up. I finally got some pictures that excite me. The weather still sucks. This is the coldest I have ever been down here. Today I wore a long sleeve-T, a hoodie, and a jacket. It was windy and choppy, but we were getting bites so who cares? The majority of our bites today were multiples. We started the morning with a triple and it went on from there. Hopefully the fishing will continue to get better and the weather will improve. We have a new group of anglers the next two days. They make our T-shirts and shirts for many of the other boats. I saw Scott Kerrigan today and he got some great shots. He may ride with us later this week. There are so many people here now. When we got in from fishing I was going to the office to get drinks for tomorrow and it took me at least 20minutes because I stopped and talked so much on the way there and back. I put up some pictures from today. We had one fish the was really cooperative. Do you see anything odd about this fish? If you look closely he is hooked around the bill and his lower jaw is lassoed shut. One of the few times I have seen that. There are a couple of shots that I think are really good. Enjoy.

The Day I'd like to Forget.

I don't even know what to say about today. Im still trying to think of a title for this post. How bout, the day I'd like to forget. Don't really have anything good to say about today, so I wont. The best part of the day was when we got in, the young boy Alex who I taught to cast yesterday came and asked me if he could use a fishing rod. I said sure and gave it to him. He came back about an hour later and said that he had caught 3 fish. I think they were some sort of Jack. He said he caught one nice one that pulled out a lot of line, and the other 2 were small. He said he was not going to eat them so he put them back. That was really fulfilling to me. Hopefully I will have something good to write about tomorrow.

Where did all the fish go?

Well since the last time I updated, I think we had a blow day. Then yesterday we went out and could not find a big body of fish and we ended up catching 4 out of 15. Today got even worse. We may have been the high boat catching 2 out of 3, and coming home after about a half day. When we got in we all went and had roasted chicken for lunch. When we got back to the boat I got out one of our small spinning rods and went to the end of the dock with a young local boy named Alex. I taught him how to cast. It is wierd to think that here he is, 10 years old and lived on an island and around water his hole life and nobody has ever taught him to cast. That was probably one of the more enjoyable experiences I have had since I have been down here. Went to Jax for dinner with our charter. This evening we had a lot of rain, tuhunder, and lightning. I can't remember if I have ever seen lightning or heard thunder down here. We have had years with ton's of rain. The wind has shifted tonight and is now out of the north. Tomorrow it is supposed to blow really hard and rain all day. I hope the weather man is wrong. So far if I needed to pick one word to describe the season down here it would be WEATHER.
